Is $80 the Market Rate for Wedding Ang Bao

After being the in Wedding Production industry for more than five years. I am constantly being asked by friends the golden question - What is the Current Wedding Ang Bao Market Rate? The "market rate" really depends on where the wedding banquet is being held at. Moreover, the market rate for ang pao fluctuates yearly. In 2008, it is 10% lower than today's rate.

5 Star Hotels in Prime Area

If the wedding banquet is held at a luxurious hotel in Singapore, be prepared to pay between $130 - $160 per person. Typically it cost the newly-weds $1500 per table inclusive of GST and service charge. This can be attributed by the high rental cost and high traffic volume.

Therefore, $1500 / 10 = $150 per person

4 Star Hotels in CBD

The minimum amount for ang bao market rate in 4 Star Hotel is estimated $100 - $120 per person. It cost rougly $1200 per table. 4 Star Hotels in CBD includes Hotel Royal Singapore, Golden Landmark Hotel.

Therefore, the red packet amount should be $1200 / 10 = $120

3 Star Hotels outside CBD

Miramar Hotel Singapore, Harbour Vill Hotel Singapore are classified as 3 Star Hotels. These hotels are situated outside the CBD areas. The interior design may not be as grand as 5 star hotels, but don't look down on the food!

The cost per table for 3 Star Hotels range from $800 - $1000. Therefore the market rate is $1000 / 10 = $100 per person.

Wedding Banquet in Resturant

If you are invited to attend wedding banquet that is held in a restaurant, say thank you! The cost of hosting a wedding dinner in restaurant is 50% cheaper comparing to 5 Star Hotels in Prime Areas

The cost range from $700 - $900 per table of 10. This works out to be $700 / 10 = $70 per head.

So is $80 the Market Rate for Wedding Ang Bao? Definitely, if it is held in a restaurant!

Variable Factors

Please also take into consideration these factors when you determine how much to give.

Wedding Banquet held on Weekdays - Deduct 15% (It is cheaper to host a wedding banquet on weekdays!)

Wedding Banquet held on Public Holidays (Especially Mon/Fri) - Add 10% (Hoteliers are smart people, they charge more on long weekends)

If your beloved or BFF is getting married - Add 50% (You won't mind giving more, will you?)

If your hated siblings or cousins getting married - Deduct 60% (Why give them so much when they didn't even respect you in the first place?

If your ex who cheated on you is getting married - Deduct 100%. Go and DON'T give any (He/She deserved it!)

If you RSVP but canot make it last minute** - Give 100% (Pass it to a friend who is attending)
